MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR OF MOTOR

Maintenance and repair of motor is one of the most important tasks carried on board a ship. It involves repairing and carrying out of routine and troubleshooting maintenance tasks on the motor of the ship and it needs to be done as quickly and efficiently as possible to reduce serious damage and motor performance.

To disassemble the motor, proceed as HAI HA M&S procedure as follows:

• Disconnect the motor form the power supply.
• Remove the direct coupling and place the motor in a clean area suitable for disassembling.
• Remove the bearing cover and the oil thrower on the direct couple side.
• Remove the bearing bracket.
• Pull out the rotor as a whole in the direction toward the fan.
• Place the rotor on a clean stand, and pull out the ball bearing with a tool.

Note: Be careful not to contaminnate disassembled bearing part, etc, with dust or dirt.

Also take care not to damage the insulation when pulling out the rotor.

INSULATION TEST
Checking the insulation of the stator winding is very important before and after the overhaul procedure. Multimeter is used for this purpose, with its one probe connected to the winding and other to the earth with switch selected in the resistance knob.

DISMANTLING THE MOTOR

• Removing the motor from the place by chain block
• Remove the coupling and key
• Keep the motor in place and fix the nuts
• Open the motor from top (cooling fan side)
• Take out the rotor by chain block, take out the stator winding separately
• Take out the motor from the place and keep it in a horizontal position
• Open the motor from any one side.
• Renewed the ball bearing. Cleaned and checked all components parts, repair if necessary.

ASSEMBLY THE MOTOR

• Box up to be done as per the markings
• Take up the rotor with one side cover (If bearing locking nut were there in one of the sides, prefer that to be the first to assemble) and push it inside the stator
• Lock with one side nut bolts, slowly insert the other side cover, do the hammering slowly by wooden hammer, insert and lock with nut and bolts, and the rotor will now apply load on the bearing
• Gently tighten the bolts using opposite tightening method. Insert the cooling fan and protection cover, and once again verify the tightness of the bolts
• Fix in place the motor as per the marking and give the connections accordingly.

TRIAL RUNNING OF THE MOTOR

The motor which has been disassembled and reassembled should be cleaned thoroughly checked for loosened screw, etc. and then placed in trial running.

If the trial running is sastisfatory, the motor may be direct coupled which be load.
